S. M. de Frey is an author who loves languages and sharing her stories worldwide.
Stories have been a central part of Simoné M. de Frey’s life since childhood. What started as a love for reading evolved into an interest in writing during her high school years. She played around with a few ideas, and when a concept for a fantasy series exploded into eight books, she knew writing wasn’t just a hobby anymore.
Putting the fantasy series on hold, she decided to test the waters of writing and publishing with a series of standalones. She finished her first novel, From the Ashes, while doing a degree in languages at the University of Pretoria. After completing university with an Honours in English, she was ready to pursue a career in the creative writing industry.
But writing quickly became more than just sharing stories with the world. As a Christian, it felt natural to write Christian characters, and she soon realised that writing offered her the opportunity to share her faith in a realistic, relatable way. While she doesn’t write Christian fiction, she intends to keep on writing what she learns as she continues to grow in her faith.
Mountains of Inspiration
I love writing with tall peaks on the horizon. Mountains are wonderful places to find inspiration. Countless secrets lie hidden within their crevices and contours—endless stories waiting to be told.
The value of these majestic landscapes runs deeper than just the breathtaking views, though. Mountains represent many of my interests as well. History, mystery, elegance, danger, beauty, scars, life, and death are all woven into the valleys and plateaus beneath bright, blue skies or shrouded in thick, icy mist. Anything can happen in the mountains, just like anything can happen in life and fiction.
But most of all, the mountains let me feel close to God. Every time I walk among them, I feel deeply aware of His grandeur, majesty, and beauty. No matter how many times I see it, I am always left in awe.
The Journey Ahead
While writing is my true passion, I also love languages in general. My love of writing and knack for noticing details encouraged me to start a company focused on various English services. Ranging from editing to content creation to translation, Inksight Studio aspires to refine written content and help authors find their voices. My latest initiative also seeks to help authors with research by offering different ways to learn from and reach experts in various specialised industries, such as psychology, medicine, law, and history. I’m very excited about these Fact-to-Fiction Courses and hope they will help countless authors conquer the dread of endless research.

Simoné completed the first draft of her debut novel in 2022. Inspired by the image of a brooch, the plot expanded into an extensive novel with mystery and history intertwining. Join siblings Emily and Cullen Ashe as they journey to uncover their family's secrets and discover why some secrets are best left buried.
Frost to the Flames
Reading Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet was an incredible experience—Shakespeare was undoubtedly a master with words. But Simoné couldn't help feeling Shakespeare wasn't fully capturing romantic tragedy. She decided to challenge the master by writing a new romantic tragedy against the backdrop of a war-riddled Norway at the end of the Viking era.
